Hi.  I was wondering if you have any experience with medications, such as antibiotics, contributing to or causing autonomic dysreflexia in high cervical SCI?

There are some medications that affect AD such as  medications that treat it, nifedipine and nitrates. It is unusual for antibiotics to affect or cause AD as it is a dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system but nothing is impossible. Typically, it is the reason for taking antibiotics that effects AD, like urinary tract infections or other infections, and pressure injury. Even though you might be feeling better, the infection is there until the entire prescription of antibiotics has been taken. Be sure to check out the AD wallet card that has more information about suspected causes. https://www.christopherreeve.org/living-with-paralysis/free-resources-and-downloads/wallet-cards Nurse Linda

PS. I just thought about GI distress from antibiotics, either upset stomach, bowel or diarrhea. That could lead to AD in the situation you describe. Follow the instructions if you should take the antibiotic with or without food. Also, add some yogurt if possible to your diet to calm the bowel. Or you might need to ask for a different antibiotic.
